One of the fun things about working in the auto transport industry is that you get to work with vehicles of all shapes and sizes. Every vehicle is unique, so if you work with them, you’ll see all kinds of strange things. And, of course, you’ll have to figure out a way to ship them! However, not all vehicles can ship easily. Some vehicles are so large, long, or heavy that they require special equipment or permits to move. That’s where heavy haulers come in.

A heavy hauler is a driver who has the experience, knowledge, and equipment to haul a load that exceeds some legal dimension limit. This load could be too tall, too wide, too long, too heavy, or any combination of those dimensions. If it exceeds one or more of the legal limits on these dimensions, it’s considered a heavy haul. Heavy haulers start with measurements.

The first thing our heavy hauling team does when they get an order is to take notes. Different heavy hauls have different needs for equipment, permits, and driving techniques, so they need to know what they’re dealing with. They’ll measure the load they need to haul thoroughly, taking note of its dimensions in all directions. Without this important information, our drivers wouldn’t know what they’re dealing with!

Then, they make sure they have the right equipment.

Equipment is make-or-break when it comes to heavy hauling. This can be quite literal: if our team doesn’t have the right trailer for a load, they can cause it to fall off or strike a bridge or tunnel wall! This would be a catastrophic outcome, but our team knows what heavy hauls need to be shipped safely. Our team has access to flatbed, step deck, lowboy, and any other type of trailer. And, if we need to haul something that can’t drive itself, we can get in touch with a crane operator to load it safely onto our trailers. Lastly, it’s all about permits.

Once we’re sure that we have the right tools to handle a load, we’ll figure out the routing details and schedule the shipment! This means we’ll determine exactly where we’re going and when, a process that includes obtaining all of the necessary permits to haul a load. We work with oversized permit experts to get all of the necessary paperwork in order. Once we have that all figured out, we’ll give the shipment the final green light and send it off to its new home!
